Paper 2’s components are one MCQ close passage (综合填空) and 1 MCQ, and 1 Open-Ended Comprehension passage (阅读理解), and it lasts for one hour and thirty minutes.

The essay, which consists of three sections and a total of 70 points, can account for up to 35% of your final grade. In addition, Paper 2 often assesses students’ comprehension of the passages and their ability to use that understanding to respond to questions.

Activities designed by our higher Chinese tuition will help students expand their vocabulary and better understand the Chinese language.

Tip #1: Improve Your Chinese Vocabulary First

The Chinese proverb states, “A slow sparrow should make an early start,” which certainly applies to pupils who struggle with the language. The Chinese language requires months or years of time and effort to establish your foundation. Thus, if you are weak in the subject, you should think about hiring a teacher.

To help pupils memorise vocabulary, tutors from O-level Chinese tuition have suggested that they make flashcards with the words on them and practice memorization in their own time.

You could, for instance, carry 10 to 20 flashcards around every day and simply practice the words while riding the bus or the MRT. In addition, having a mini-challenge with your pals to see who can memorise more words each week can add to the excitement.

Tip #2: Know your comprehension questions

A strong foundation in Chinese will inevitably aid students in better comprehending the text when completing Paper 2. By becoming more accustomed to the various question formats and types, as well as the appropriate ways to respond to the questions, you can also improve your results on the Comprehension part. These are the six different categories of questions and the methods of answering them that our secondary Chinese tutors have compiled.

Repeated Questions 复述

Take the time to carefully read the text and highlight the critical details that are required to respond to the question. Students can learn to pick up on and recognize the keywords to utilise to identify the proper paragraph because some questions also include the exact keywords from the paragraph.

Reformation questions 重整

The components of the responses to these questions typically appear in various paragraphs. To select the pertinent information from several paragraphs and combine it to respond entirely to the issue, you will need to read and comprehend the entire essay. By examining the overall points given for the question, you may calculate how many response components to keep an eye out for.

Explanation questions 释题: You must provide an explanation for the meaning of specific phrases or sentences in this type of question. By dividing these sentences into shorter phrases or words, you can give an answer. A trick you can use if you don’t comprehend the phrases in question is to read the sentences before and after them and use that to infer their meaning subtly.

Extending questions 伸展: These inquiries assess students’ comprehension of the primary points, motivations, and feelings that the author is attempting to express.

Creative questions 创意题: Based on the essay, you must explain or offer suggestions or comments.

Evaluative question 评鉴题

These kinds of evaluative questions examine students’ ability to assess the characters’ personalities, behaviours, and expressions in light of the essay.

With the help of your Chinese tutor, you may practice your vocabulary by taking weekly spelling and dictation tests.

You can learn to rapidly recognize the various question types by practising a few comprehension questions each day from assessment books or past-year papers. Eventually, this will help you become proficient at answering each question.
